New Jets
After last week and the debacle I decided it was not a good idea to write anything about the Jets. Since there was nothing good/nice to say, it was better to just shut up.
This week the Washington Redskins came to Giants Sadium with the beginning of a new era. Kellen Clemens was the starter and new hope was instilled upon the Jets faithful. Elation began on the opening kickoff with Leon Washington running the ball 86 yards for a touch down! Now THAT got “Gang Green” going!
Cartwright recieves the kick and runs it to Washingtons 30. 10 plays, 1 penalty against the Jets, 5:06 later, Shaun Suisham kicks a 46 yard field goal to get Washington back into the game. Now it’s the Jet’s turn with Kellen Clemens at the helm!
Clemens and the Jets use up 13:02 along with a roughing the passer penalty to drive the ball 69 yards. Mike Nugent kicks a 29 yard field goal to give the points back to the Jets. 10-3 Jets at the end of the 1st quarter.
The second quarter has the Jets adding to their lead with Joe Kowalewski catching a 1 yard touchdown pass from Clemens to put the Jets up by 14. Gang Green is going crazy at this point. The crowd is having the time of their lives.
This is where it all turns sour…The Jets defense does a good job of preventing the Redskins from getting into the end zone. Only problem is the Jets offense is unable to score again. Washington scores 17 unanswered points in the second half, including a 2 point conversion to put them up by 3.
The Jets were able to get the ball and put Mike Nugent in position to tie the game with 10 seconds remaining on the clock. The kick is up….and it’s good from 30 yards. Overtime and new hope after the defensive letdown.
You know the ending as Shaun Suisham kicks the game winner in OT.
My take on the game goes something like this. Kellen Clemens made some fantastic decisions. He ran well and threw exteremly well. Some dropped passes, a questionable call on Jerich Cotchery, and the ending should have been different.
On the defensive side of the ball, I am not so sure. The defense as a unit played a solid first half. Now we are back to finishing a game. With a 14 polnt lead, the defense was unable to contain Cambell and Portis and allowed the Skins to take the lead. Were they TIRED? That was my thought in some earlier games. The offense gave them some rest this time around so that excuse is garbage.
As for Chad Pennington, I like him as a player and team leader. I think he knows his time is done with the Jets. Kellen Clemens has shown he is capable of leading this offense. Chad should stay with the team because of his knowledge of the game. He knows he would take a hefty paycut for that to happen. That is for another day during the offseason.
If I missed anything or you have comments on this, please feel free to leave them.
Wishing the Jets all the best and hoping they are able to get a couple wins before the season ends!
